The No. 1408 “HERCULES Golden Cutter” smooth plane was produced for the low-price market. The finish was left to a minimum, with no polishing and only one coat of enamel. Hardwood was used for the handle and knob, rather than Mahogany. Some later planes featured plastic handles and knobs.
These planes were enameled green and came with gold anodized cutters. They are sometimes referred to as the “John Deere planes”.
