Sargent No. 7C Smooth Plane

Sargent No 7c Smooth Plane
Sargent “Shaw’s Patent” Bench Planes
as illustrated in the Sargent catalog of 1911.

Sargent V.B.M Adjustable Iron Planes

With Patent Frog — Adjustable without removing cutter.
Patented February 3, 1891 and July 3, 1906.

Frog Adjustment.

FINE WORK requires a very narrow opening between the front of the mouth and the cutting edge of the cutter. Coarse work requires support close to the cutting edge of the cutter to prevent chattering. By this improved construction, the frog with the cutter still clamped in position on it may be adjusted forward for fine work or backward for coarse work and at all times it is so supported as to prevent chattering. The Frog is moved forward or backward on a line parallel with the base so that no adjustment of the Cutter is required after the Frog adjustment has been made.
The Clamp and the Cutter may be left fastened to the Frog while the adjustment is being made.

Solid — Rigid — Firm.

These planes have the double seat, giving two points of contact of the bottom of the Frog with the Bed or Bottom of the Plane. At these points both the Frog and the Bed are profiled or milled, insuring accuracy of fit and a solid, firm seating of the Frog on the Bed.

The above cut shows in section the Improved Iron Bench Plane, and give the position of the parts. All our Cutters are made from the best double refined English Cast Steel, tempered by the very best improved process, then highly polished and sharpened ready for use, and are WARRANTED.

Additional Notes:

This plane is referred to as a Shaw’s Patent, due to John H. Shaw’s unique frog adjustment which allows for the movement of the frog forward and backward without changing the position of the cutter. It should be noted that Stanley Tools was granted a patent for a similar improvement for their planes on April 19, 1910, almost four years after Shaw’s patent.

The first known appearance of this plane is in the 1910 Sargent Catalogue, though the plane may have been available some years earlier as John H. Shaw’s Patent was granted in 1906. As with David E. Heckel’s book, “Sargent Planes – Identification And Value Guide”, I have listed 1910 as the beginning date of manufacture.

The body casting, frog and lever cap are all numbered 7. The cutter is numbered 7C.
